Scripture: John 19:28-30

Sermon Outline:

Thesis:  The sixth saying from the Cross is the word of triumph – “It is finished.”  The great shout, “Finished!” was the final evidence that God’s plan of salvation was completed.

A. “It is finished” – John 19:30

1. Matthew 27:50 – “And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.”
2. Mark 15:37 – “With a loud cry, Jesus breathed his last.”
3. Matthew 27:51 – “At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.”

B.  Why do believers in Christ so often live as though God’s plan of salvation is unfinished?

1. The forgiveness of sins and the joy of a guilt-free life wanes.
2. We fall into the trap of being saved by grace but sustained by works – the “joy robber.”

C. Conclusion:  Holy Communion: The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper will be observed.
